We Have to Let Students Go Bankrupt Again

 as appearing in The Street

BOSTON (MainStreet) — We've all heard the figures: Student loan debt in the United States now exceeds $1 trillion dollars, surpassing our nation's collective credit card debt.
Yet, unlike our credit card debt — or any other debt, for that matter — student loans for the most part cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. A report released in August by the Center for American Progress, though, calls for that to change.

Will the Government Now Monitor Your Credit Card Data?

 as appearing on TheStreet

NEW YORK (LowCards.com) — The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is thinking of taking a new approach to "financial protection" by monitoring 80% of all credit card transactions in the United States. This would be done through a controversial data mining program that would evaluate up to 42 billion transactions in a single year.

Sneaky Late Fees: Avoiding the Discredit

http://www.mainstreet.com/article/moneyinvesting/credit/debt/sneaky-late-fees-avoiding-discredit

NEW YORK (MainStreet) — How well do you know the fine print on your credit card's late fees? What do you think the impact on your credit score is? How can you avoid the late fees trap?
The average number of credit cards per U.S. household is six. In comparison, the figure for Canada is two. Speaking in purely mathematical terms, Americans are three times as likely to have a problem with late fees on their credit cardhttp://www.mainstreet.com/article/moneyinvesting/credit/debt/sneaky-late-fees-avoiding-discredit# as their neighbors up north! What can we do to even the odds?

Cutting the accelerating cost of car insurance

The five-year increase in the price of motor vehicle insurance -- 23.2% -- is more than double the 10.7% rise in consumer prices, according to the Labor Department.
Claims, however, are at best just keeping up with inflation, says the Consumer Federation of America's Mark Romano: "You're certainly not getting any more for your money."

Should you have an accident, make sure your coverage pays off.

Shopping for a Business Bank Account With Fewer Fees

Question: Is it better to keep more money in my business bank account, or less? I don’t want to pay the stupid minimum monthly balance fee to the bank. The minimum is $15,000, which I can barely do. Is it worth the $17 fee per month, or do I have any alternatives?

The Cost of Chronic Disease

Chronic disease is a difficult challenge for afflicted individuals, and because of its pervasiveness it has also become a significant problem for the nation, causing 70% of U.S. deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Chronic health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer and kidney disease account for more than 75% of the nation's $2.7 trillion in annual spending for medical care, says Ursula Bauer of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Tips for Deducting the Home Office

The home office deduction seems pretty straight forward, but like most parts of the tax code, there are nuances and eligibility requirements that can make claiming the deductions difficult.
Last week, a client explained that he has a home office but he doesn’t have a specific place set up in his apartment for his business. He lives in a two-bedroom apartment with a roommate who inhabits the second bedroom. He works at the business sometimes on the dining room table, oftentimes on the couch in the living room and in bed late at night. He stores inventory in the laundry room. “So how do I determine the deduction?” he wondered.

Does My Income Matter With Car Loan Co-Signer?

Dear Driving for Dollars,
I am a server in a restaurant. I make good money when you count my tips, but on paper my income is much less, so I am having a hard time getting a good interest rate on a car loan. I think I have a friend with great credit and a good income to co-sign for me. How much does my income matter with a co-signer?
-James
Dear James,
When you get a co-signer for a car loan, that person's income, credit score and history are taken into account. In short, the lender will be looking at your friend's ability to repay the loan entirely on his or her income and credit profile. If the friend has the income and credit that you say, you should be approved for a better interest rate than on your own.

Common Pieces of Money Advice You Can't Afford to Follow

Few of us feel like financial experts, so when it comes to money matters, we generally welcome advice. The trouble, though, is that not all the financial advice the professionals dish out is sound, despite often seeming so. Below you'll find several examples of bad financial advice. There are plenty of others, though, so carefully assess any guidance you run across.

5 Easy Ways to Reduce Your Health-Care Costs

Health-care costs are still outpacing inflation, but the growth rate is starting to decline.
Since the 1990’s health-care costs have increased at double-digit rates each year, but now PwC’s Health Research Institute is projecting a single digit growth rate of 4.5%. The slowdown is good news for consumers, and they can also pat themselves on the back for helping control the rise.

Having the Talk: How Boomers Should Approach Aging Parent Issues

Boomers who had a rough time getting through “the talk” with their kids might be in for a surprise: there’s another uncomfortable discussion they might face--this one with aging parents.
Telling parents that it’s not safe for them to drive, live on their own or manage their finances independently can be tough—but it’s a necessary conversation.
Too often, adult children avoid having the talk until it’s too late, which can make it hard to implement changes or get the required help.

Taking Away Dad’s Checking Account

It’s one of the toughest conversations an adult child will have with a parent: helping mom or dad to understand- and accept- it's time to relinquish control of their finances.
The discussion is often fraught with emotion: anger, embarrassment, sibling rivalry and fear, just to name a few.
Moreover, it’s the kind of thing that tends to creeps up on you. Until the day it smacks you in the face. You drop by mom’s place and notice mail carelessly piled on the table; much of it appears to be bills. On the kitchen counter you find a bag stuffed with receipts and there’s cash scattered around. This is totally out of character for your neat-freak mom who insisted you straighten your room before you could go out and play. She taught high school algebra for 30 years. Now her apartment is a disorganized tangle of paperwork

When Mom and Dad Disagree About Money

Dear Dave,

15 Tips to Pump Up Your Too-Small Emergency Fund

Financial experts say your emergency fund should be big enough to cover at least three to six months' worth of expenses in case you get sick and can't work or you lose your job. Some financial advisors say an emergency fund robust enough to cover 12 months' worth of expenses is even better, but that's looking a lot like a pipe dream: A recent Bankrate survey revealed that just 24 percent of Americans have enough savings to cover at least six months of expenses, and 50 percent have less than three months' expenses saved up. And 27 percent are living paycheck to paycheck, without any savings at all.

The consequences of not having enough in emergency savings can be dire depending on the nature of your emergency. You may have to rely on credit cards if you have them, or the kindness of friends and relatives, or a high-interest short-term loan.

Short on Savings, Americans Still Feeling Positive

  •

Financial Security Index Charts Short On Savings, Americans Still Feeling Positive
Americans are feeling very secure about their personal finances, according to Bankrate's June 2013 Financial Security Index. The index registered 102.7 in June. Not only is that a record high, it also marks the first time the index has been in positive territory for four straight months since the index's creation in December 2010.
The index came back with other positive records, too. The percentage of those feeling less secure about their jobs and those reporting lower net worth than last year hit all-time lows. Only 1 in 5 Americans felt their overall financial situation got worse versus the previous year, tying the lowest reading from April 2013. And 30% of consumers felt more comfortable about their debt, a new high.

401(k) Tips for Recent College Grads

The thought of retirement may seem like the distant future to young grads, but socking away even a small amount into savings as a young adult can drastically impact the quality of post-work life.
A recent Merrill Edge report shows that young investors are starting to save much earlier with an average starting age of 22, while baby boomers started saving on average 13 years later at the age of 35.
What’s more, Gen Y, (ages 18-34), is increasingly optimistic about their retirement savings potential, with those surveyed stating they would save on average nearly $2.5 million for their retirement compared to those ages 51-64, who anticipate saving just $260,000.

5 Easy Ways to Slash Summer Energy Bills

As temperatures rise, it’s common for utility bills to do the same.

A whole-house makeover isn’t necessary to begin generating energy savings this summer. Even the simplest changes can save you some serious dough in no time.
Clean filters
Want your air conditioner to run as efficiently and inexpensively as possible? Be sure to put “clean filters” at the top of your to-do list.
Dirty filters significantly block airflow and reduce a system’s efficiency. With normal airflow obstructed, air that bypasses the filter may carry dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the coil’s heat-absorbing capacity. Clean your filter and you can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by up to 15%.
For central air conditioners, filters are

Identity Theft Protection Companies: Separating the Hype from the Real

The identity theft prevention industry has long been defined by its habits of overpromising and underdelivering. Perhaps the best example of that was the famous LifeLock (LOCK) ad campaign, in which the company's CEO proudly announced: "My name is Todd Davis. This is my Social Security number: 457-55-5462."

The company was, in essence, boasting that its protection was so secure that its CEO could publish his Social Security number for all the world to see, without consequence.

3 Retirement Strategies to Employ Before You Hit 40

It's never too early to start preparing for retirement. To make sure you're on the right path, here are three retirement strategies to put in place before hitting the big four-oh. (See also these strategies for planning in your thirties, forties, fifties and beyond). If you adopt the right moves at each stage, you'll be more able to retire when and how you want.

1. Identify, prioritize, and plan

Let's face it. Your forties are a stage of life where you are pulled in many directions -- physically, emotionally, and financially. Whittling down credit card debt, paying off your own student loans, saving for your child's college education, and contributing to your retirement all compete for your dollars. But you don't have to let it overwhelm and discourage you.

Inheriting Debt: How to Deal When You're Left a Money Mess

Grandma and Gramps are not doing well. In fact, the state of finances for the elderly is a shambles.

Let's start with falling home prices. The AARP found that between 2007 and 2011, "3.5 million loans held by people age 50 or older were underwater, 600,000 were in foreclosure, and another 625,000 were 90 or more days delinquent." And that doesn't include the 1.5 million seniors who lost their homes during that period.
Surprisingly, another source of distress for seniors is student loans. A shocking 2.2 million Americans age 60 or older have student loan debt, with an average balance of $19,521, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Just thinking about money can corrupt you

http://money.cnn.com/2013/06/17/pf/money-corrupt/index.html

When money is on your mind, you may be more likely to act unethically.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Simply thinking about money can trigger people to lie, steal and make unethical decisions, new research shows.

People who have just seen images of money or phrases about money are more likely to do something unethical like steal paper from their office because they ran out of paper at home. They're more apt to hire a candidate who says he will share confidential insider information about his former company. And if it means winning money, they're more likely to lie to get it.

Keeping debts secret from spouse is ill advised

Dear Liz: I have three credit cards that are in my name only, plus a small loan at my credit union. My husband did not sign for any of these, nor does he know the extent of my debt, which is about $10,000. If I should die before I can get them paid off, will he be responsible for my debt?
Answer: Your debts become an obligation of your estate when you die. That means creditors will be paid out of the assets you leave behind. The extent to which creditors can make a claim on jointly owned assets — such as, say, your home — varies by state. In a community property state such as California, debts are generally considered owed by both people in a marriage, so a jointly owned home would be fair game. In other states, creditors could go after assets co-owned by your husband if the debts were incurred to benefit you both.

Put on Your Detective Cap to Learn More About Your Potential Employer

http://www.savvysugar.com/How-Research-Company-23243414

Doing research on a company is one of the first steps to tailoring your job application and prepping for an interview. One of the more common ways people learn about the company is by googling it and seeing what kind of articles pop up in their search. Another way is to read the company's "FAQ" or "About Us" section. But if you rely on those sources alone, you will be only scraping the surface of the company. You'll also be reading the same things other competing job candidates will be reading. To get a leg up on your competitors, check out these little known sources:

High-Paying Careers For People With Notoriously Low-Paying Degrees

http://www.savvysugar.com/Highest-Paying-Jobs-From-Different-Majors-30727908

College graduates these days face an average debt of $25,000 and a shaky job market. It may seem like a finance or medical degree is the only good option in this scenario, but we're a little more optimistic. Even if you have a degree in one of PayScale's lowest-paying college majors, it is possible to find a career that pays surprisingly well. In most cases, these aren't careers that happen over night, and many will require years of experience and working your way up through the ranks. The point is that a low-starting salary alone shouldn't deter you from pursuing a certain degree or career path –– it's what you do with it that counts.
Note: Each job listed requires a bachelor’s degree. Salaries noted are mid-career estimates.

The Pros and Cons of Paying Cash For a House

http://www.savvysugar.com/Paying-Cash-Home-30786786

My husband said that when we do buy a house, he wants to just buy it with cash so we can own it outright and in our way say "screw you" to the banks. I like that idea, but just like any financial decision, there are pros and cons to doing this.
Pros
No Credit History Needed
A long time ago I read a story of a guy who avoided credit cards and loans like the plague so he did not have a credit history, but he had considerable savings. When he wanted to buy a house no one would give him a loan, so he bought a house outright with his savings. In situations where you do not have the ability to get a reasonable loan, then paying cash might be the best option.

Stay-at-Home Dads Talk Breadwinner Wives, Leaving the Workforce

http://www.savvysugar.com/Stay--Home-Dads-Talk-Breadwinner-Wives-30779083

With so many interpretations of the "modern family," the stay-at-home dad is becoming a more talked-about role. In fact, statistics show that house husbands are gradually on the rise. According to the census, 32 percent of married fathers in 2011 were primary caregivers of their kids. That's up from 26 percent in 2002.
The topic of house husbands surfaced again in the media when results of a recent Pew study revealed that 40 percent of households with children under 18 have mothers who are the sole or primary income provider for the family.

Change jobs, get poor 401(k) help

http://money.cnn.com/2013/06/01/retirement/401k-rollover.moneymag/index.html

The 401(k) provider at your next workplace may not give you the best advice on rollovers, judging from a recent report by the Government Accountability Office.

New hires are often steered toward moving their old 401(k) into an IRA at the company managing their new employer's plan, the GAO found, and are given information that is inaccurate, vague, or confusing.
When a GAO researcher posed as a job-changer seeking help with his 401(k), 12 out of 30 401(k) call center representatives raised doubts about his ability to roll money from his old 401(k) into a new plan. And inefficient or complex procedures make it much harder to roll an old 401(k) into a new one than it is to move the money into an IRA.

5 Celebrity Money Mistakes

There’s never a dull moment when you’re a celebrity. Headlines are quick to point out their imperfections, including some of their financial mishaps. Here’s a look at five famous financial faux pas and the lessons learned.

Excessive Spending

Sir Elton John sang the financial blues in 2002 while filing for bankruptcy. With debt once soaring to the tune of $2 million per month, he has admittedly battled with “excessive” spending, including blowing an obsessive $400,000 a month on flower arrangements. This proves it doesn’t matter how much money you make, it’s how you manage it that counts.

Sites to Help You Save Big on Medical Bills

http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/06/07/7-sites-to-help-save-big-on-medical-bills/?intcmp=trending

Need a CBC blood test? You might pay $16 at one New York lab – or $117 at another. How about an echocardiogram with Doppler? It may run you $250, or over $2000, depending on where you go.
One of the biggest frustrations about our current healthcare system is that there is little transparency. Insurance is partly to blame, since insured patients usually just focus on their deductibles and co-pays. But millions of consumers remain uninsured or have high deductibles, and even consumers with good health insurance may wind up paying hefty out-of-pocket medical bills. Consumers with good insurance may also find lower prescription drug prices by shopping around and paying cash.
