Employees are increasingly losing employer-sponsored health-care plans, but they can’t blame the new health-care reform entirely for their lost coverage. New data show employers around the country have been dropping insurance coverage for their workers over the past decade in an effort to reduce their costs as health-care prices soar.
In the past ten years, employer-sponsored health insurance has fallen by about 10%, according to the Robert

The Hassle of Being in Debt

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/03/19/hassle-being-in-debt/

A few months ago, I wrote about how we dug ourselves out of debt.Once we cut our expenses and stopped living beyond our means, it didn't take long to make significant progress against the tens of thousands of dollars we owed. And after a few years of struggle and sacrifice, we finally paid everything off. Once all of our consumer debts were gone, we turned our focus to our mortgage.
Because we were young and dumb when we upgraded to our current home, we didn't put a lot of money down. Therefore, we were stuck paying private mortgage insurance. Big mistake. Unfortunately, there was no easy solution to our problem

Doubling Your Limits Doesn't Double Your Rates

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/03/21/doubling-your-limits-doesnt-double-your-rates/

Question: I just leased a vehicle and have to carry liability of 100/300/50.  I currently have limits of only 50/100/50, so I'm wondering if this change will make my policy premium go up by a lot of money.
Answer: We won't kid you, You're getting more coverage, so you will pay more. But doubling your car insurance liability limits will not double your rates.
How much will it cost?  We can't tell you an exact amount because your car insurance rates are determined using many different risk factors that include personal information we don't have.  The best way to get an accurate quote is to comparison shop here, or by calling an agent to run some numbers.

Debt vs. Savings: Who Gets Paid First?

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/03/20/debt-vs-savings-who-gets-paid-first/?intcmp=trending

I've heard that you should always pay your debts down before saving anything. Is that true? For example, if you have a bunch of student loans, should you pay those off before starting a savings account?
    - Jane
    Dear Jane,
Sure, from a basic math standpoint, it would make sense to pay off all debt before beginning a savings plan. After all, lenders add finance fees to an amount owed, so you're losing money when you hang on to balances. That's especially true considering how low interest rates are on savings and how high they can be on loans

Federal Subsidized Loan Rates May Double July 1

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/03/29/congressional-action-student-loan-hike/

Federal student loan rates are set to increase July 1 if Congress fails to act and students may be on the hook for up to $5,000 on new loans.
Subsidized Stafford loan interest rates will nearly double increasing to 6.8% from 3.4% if Congress doesn’t pass legislation preventing the rate to go up, which would add up to $6 billion. The mid-summer hike would be untimely since it would hit new students heading into their freshman year. The hikes are only for subsidized loans, and will only impact those taking out new loans.

1 in 4 Teens Plans to Rely Financially on Parents Until Age 27

After all, if we can teach teens to handle money responsibly, we can ensure that the next generation of adults won't make a mess of things. Right?

How to Avoid an IRS Audit

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/03/29/how-to-avoid-irs-audit/

Getting audited is every taxpayer’s nightmare, but rest assured: your chances of being singled out for an audit are slim.
According to the IRS, approximately 1% of the tens of millions of taxes filed each year get audited. However, if the IRS finds holes in your tax returns, the repercussions can be wide ranging and financially devastating.
While no one is immune from the magnifying glass, certain filers are more likely to attract the scrutiny from the IRS, including those making more than $1 million a year, self-employed individuals and those claiming certain tax deductions like the home office credit.
The best strategy for small business owners to avoid an audit is to have a dedicated business credit card that can provide detailed reports to track spending and expenses.
Here are additional strategies to avoid having your tax returns flagged for an audit:

Bank of America tops list of mortgage complaints by borrowers

    http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-mortgage-complaints-20130329,0,6769905.story

Bank of America Corp., which handles customer service on about 15% of U.S. home loans, has accounted for 30% of the mortgage complaints logged by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, according to a new database made public by the federal watchdog.
The level of customer discontent — far greater than at home-lending rivals Wells Fargo & Co. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. — reflects BofA's struggles since its 2008 acquisition of Countrywide Financial Corp. in Calabasas. Countrywide had become the No. 1 mortgage firm by specializing in subprime and other high-risk loans.

Uncle Sam Can Help Pay Some Adoption Costs

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2012/03/14/uncle-sam-can-help-pay-some-adoption-costs/

Raising kids is expensive. And if you're trying to adopt, it can cost you even more.
But there is tax help available. Parents can claim a tax credit that covers some adoption expenses. For 2011 returns, the credit could be as much as $13,360.
And for the 2011 tax year, a provision in the health care reform act makes the adoption tax credit refundable. That means if you don't owe the Internal Revenue Service anything when you file, the credit will be returned to you as a refund.

Is That Charity Street Canvasser Legit?

    http://www.dailyfinance.com/2013/03/29/charity-street-canvassers-legitimate-or-scam/

They're a ubiquitous sight in major cities around the world: youths in brightly colored T-shirts stopping passersby on sidewalks, asking questions like, "Do you care about the planet?" "Do you want to help save children?" "Do you have a few minutes to talk about how to make the world a better place?"

Armed with a clipboard and a mission, these fundraisers are after donors, and their dollars, working for a variety of charities with missions ranging from environmental sustainability to equality to eliminating hunger.

And while most people wouldn't give their wallet to a stranger on the street, many people give these strangers their personal and financial information. But it's not always wise -- or for the benefit of humankind.

Lessons Learned in Investing in Rental Properties

    http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/29/lessons-learned-in-investing-in-rental-properties/?ref=your-money

This week’s Your Money column looks at the pros and cons of investing in rental properties.
The idea of buying a house and renting it out may seem especially attractive now, with home prices still reasonable, though rising, in many places and interest rates still at incredibly low levels. And if you’re thinking about retirement, the income can serve as an inflation-adjusted annuity of sorts, since rents are likely to rise over time.
But before making any moves, there are a variety of calculations you need to make and serious questions you need to consider. The primary one is whether you want to concentrate a major portion of your savings in one asset.

Tax-Time Refund Loans vs. Lines of Credit

    http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/28/tax-time-refund-loans-vs-lines-of-credit/?ref=your-money

The plethora of tax-time financial products aimed at lower- and moderate-income Americans can be mind-boggling. Adding to the complexity, there’s even some disagreement over what they should be called.
Earlier this week, I wrote about a report from the National Consumer Law Center, which outlined new alternatives to tax-refund-anticipation loans — high-cost, short-term loans made to consumers who pay them back when they get their income tax refunds. Such loans are much less prevalent now, in part because of a federal crackdown on banks that made many of the loans.

    The Most Common Consumer Complaints

    http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/28/the-most-common-consumer-complaints/

Consumer complaints to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau were most often about mortgages and credit cards, according to a summary the agency issued Thursday.
The federal agency began taking complaints about credit cards in July 2011 and has gradually added other categories, including mortgages, bank accounts, private student loans and other consumer loans. Most recently, it added credit reporting as a category, and is working to add others including payday loans and debt collection.

    Protecting an elderly mother's assets

    http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-montalk-20130331,0,4772414.column

Dear Liz: Could you advise us on how to protect our 93-year-old mother's assets if she should become ill or die? She does not have a living will or a trust regarding her two properties.
Answer: "If" she should become ill or die? Your mother has been fortunate to have had a long life, presumably without becoming incapacitated, but her luck can't hold out forever.
Your mother needs several legal documents to protect both herself and her assets. Perhaps the most important are powers of attorney for healthcare and for finances. These documents allow people she designates to make medical decisions and handle her finances for her should she become incapacitated. In addition, she may want to fill out a living will, which would outline the life-prolonging care she would and wouldn't want if she can't make her wishes known.

    Even small companies are outsourcing

Mike Scanlin and Margo Redfern have saved lots of money -- and paperwork -- by hiring freelancers abroad.
    NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Why hire American if others can do it for less? Corporate giants have been asking that question for years, but now many small businesses are too.

Outsourcing abroad has already saved Mike Scanlin half a million dollars.

In 2009, the software engineer-turned-venture capitalist started building Born to Sell, an online investment tool. Hiring programmers in nearby Silicon Valley would have cost him $600,000 over the course of a year.

Boost take-home pay by claiming more allowances on Form W-4

    http://www.latimes.com/business/realestate/la-fi-lew-20130331,0,7793024.story

You can raise your take-home pay by increasing the number of allowances on the tax form you fill out at work. This doesn't change your total tax burden, however.

What Congress giveth, Congress taketh away.
And so it was that on Jan. 1 most wage earners found themselves a little light in the paycheck. The reason, of course, is that lawmakers late last year allowed the 2-percentage-point cut in the employee portion of the FICA tax to expire.
That benefit was enacted in 2010 to put more cash in taxpayers' wallets during the tough economic downturn.

You've done the work and delivered it on time, but where's the check? Here are six ways to get what's coming to you.

FORTUNE -- Dear Annie: After losing my job in 2011, when my department was eliminated in a restructuring, I decided to go out on my own and do web design and SEO consulting on a freelance basis. It's been great, except for one big problem. Over and over, I do the work, the client is happy with it, everything's cool, but I end up waiting and waiting to get paid -- and, in a couple of cases, have not been paid at all despite repeated, polite reminders.

Meet the 'missing millions' who've vanished from the economy

    http://money.cnn.com/2013/03/21/news/economy/economy-missing-millions.pr.fortune/index.html

As you've probably seen, there's good economic news. Since the election in November, employers have created about 200,000 jobs a month, the unemployment rate has dipped to 7.7%, and overall spending has held up pretty well in the face of tax hikes and the imposition of reductions in federal spending. At least for now, the economic optimists -- myself included -- have been vindicated. With house prices and disposable income both rising, we can be fairly confident that the recent progress will be sustained.

Furlough means I can't pay my student loan

    http://money.cnn.com/2013/03/28/news/economy/federal-workers-student-loans/index.html?iid=A_E_News

mom to three kids, including Micah, 8, will have to delay paying off $10,000 in student loans if furloughs cut her pay by 20%.

    WASHINGTON (CNNMoney)

Upcoming furloughs mean a 20% pay cut for thousands of federal workers -- and some tough budgeting choices. For many, student loan payments will be the first to go.

Laurie Vroman has already made her decision. She has three young children and makes $37,000 a year as a management assistant at an Army arsenal near Albany, N.Y.

Surprise! Forgiven debt may be taxable income

    http://lifeinc.today.com/_news/2013/03/15/17314914-surprise-forgiven-debt-may-be-taxable-income?lite

Creditors are often willing to negotiate a significant discount to settle a debt they know the customer can’t pay in full. Millions of Americans buried in consumer debt took advantage of such a settlement offer last year.
Now it’s time to pay taxes on the part of the debt that was forgiven.
“If you had any debt that was forgiven and the amount you saved was more than $600, the IRS considers that taxable income,” said Bill Hardekopf, CEO of Lowcards.com. “You need to claim that on your tax return.”
Let’s say you owed the credit card company $15,000 and they let you settle the account for only $10,000. The $5,000 they forgave is taxable. If you’re in the 15 percent tax bracket, you’d owe $750. Clearly, that’s easier on your budget than the $5,000 you owed, but it could come as quite a shock if you didn’t know about it.

Tips for Disputing Credit Report Errors

    http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/04/tips-for-disputing-credit-report-errors/?ref=credit

Checking the accuracy of your credit report is important, given recent reports that 5 percent of consumers may have errors in their reports that can result in higher interest rates on a loan.
The National Foundation for Credit Counseling has developed a list of “do’s” and “don’ts” for managing your report, which tracks your individual borrowing history. The major credit bureaus — Experian, TransUnion and Equifax — use information in the reports to create a credit score, which lenders use to decide if you are a good candidate for a loan and what interest rate you qualify for. Scores can also be used to determine eligibility for other financial products, like insurance.
    Here’s the foundation’s list:
Review your report for accuracy at AnnualCreditReport.com. You’re entitled by law to one free report from each of the three major bureaus every 12 months, so you can check a different one every four months.

How to Reduce Your Insurance Premiums and File Effective Claims

As with most other things, when it comes to insurance, you get what you pay for.
Don't pay to insure against minor losses, but don't ignore real perils just because coverage carries hefty premiums.
You can lower your premiums with a higher deductible. May agents recommend higher deductibles on property insurance and putting the money you save toward additional liability coverage.
How much can you afford for a deductible or uninsured risk? Look at your cash flow. If you can pay for a loss out of cash on hand, consider not insuring it.
You can also save money on insurance by obtaining it through a trade group or an association. Many associations offer insurance tailored to your industry needs -- everything from disability and health to liability and property coverage.
